Security and Safety Films
Discreet Protection That Makes a Difference
At The Tint Shop, we provide high-performance security and safety films designed to significantly upgrade the safety of your existing glass surfaces. These films are ideal for reducing the risk of injury, deterring intruders, and offering enhanced protection in high-risk environments. They are a smart, subtle solution for homes, commercial properties, public buildings, transport systems, banks, and consulates, offering peace of mind without compromising on natural light, aesthetics, or visibility.
Whether you’re protecting a shopfront, office, school, hospital, consulate, bank, or residential property, our films deliver invisible but effective security — strengthening existing glass to help safeguard occupants, assets, and property.
What Are Safety and Security Films?
Security and safety films are specially engineered polyester laminates that bond to existing glass surfaces. In the event of impact, these films hold the glass together, preventing shattering and reducing the risk of injury from sharp shards. They provide a cost-effective alternative to replacing windows with thicker laminated or toughened glass, offering protection while retaining the transparency, light, and aesthetic appeal of your glazing.
Films are available in a variety of thicknesses and performance grades, meaning they can be tailored to meet everything from everyday safety requirements to more robust, high-security protection for sensitive areas. They are also suitable for retrofitting onto existing glazing, making them a flexible solution for both new builds and renovations.
Thickness and Performance Grades
- 100 micron (4 mil) Basic shatter resistance for everyday safety, reducing the risk of injury from accidental knocks or minor impacts.
- 175–200 micron (7–8 mil) Light security and anti-vandalism protection, suitable for shopfronts or areas prone to minor forced entry attempts.
- 300 micron (12 mil) and above High-impact protection and forced-entry resistance for commercial premises, schools, healthcare facilities, banks, and consulates.
- Up to 400 micron (16 mil) Maximum protection for high-risk environments, including blast mitigation, government buildings, embassies, banks, consulates, or areas requiring bullet-resistant performance when combined with laminated glass.
How Security Films Deter Attack
When glass is struck, security films absorb the energy of the impact and hold the fragments in place. This delay is often enough to deter opportunistic intruders, reduce the likelihood of smash-and-grab thefts, and provide crucial response time for security personnel or building occupants.
Security films are widely used in retail, banking, commercial, and public buildings, providing effective, discreet protection while maintaining a professional and welcoming environment.
Bomb Blast and Bullet-Resistant Protection
For higher-risk applications, security films can form part of a comprehensive glazing protection system. While no film alone can make glass entirely bulletproof, thicker films combined with laminated or polycarbonate glass can significantly enhance resistance to forced entry and ballistic impact.
For blast mitigation, films reduce the risk of injury from flying glass fragments during explosions. Paired with glass anchoring systems, these films ensure broken glass remains attached to the frame, minimising the danger to occupants and reducing property damage.
Glass Anchorage Systems
For large panes or critical installations, anchoring systems provide mechanical reinforcement to the glass and film. Using structural silicone or retention bars, these systems secure the glass to the frame, preventing entire panes from dislodging during high impact or blast events.
Anchoring systems are commonly installed in government buildings, consulates, embassies, banks, and other high-security locations, offering enhanced protection and regulatory compliance.
Public Transport Applications
Security and safety films are extensively used on trains, trams, buses, and other public transport vehicles. Applied to windows and internal partitions, these films help prevent injury during accidents or vandalism. By holding glass fragments in place, they reduce service disruption, lower maintenance costs, and improve passenger safety across high-traffic environments.
